LPG in cylinders: 11 kg or 33 kg for heating your home and powering appliances?

Pure technical propane or a propane-butane blend? When is it worth investing in a set of 33-kg cylinders with an automatic switch, and when is a standard 11-kg cylinder sufficient?

Pure Propane or Propane-Butane? The Physics of Evaporation at Low Temperatures

For home heating systems, construction heaters, and radiant heaters, the composition of the gas in the cylinder is of critical importance. The propane-butane mixture (approx. 50/50 or 40/60) commonly used in stoves has a significant physical limitation: - The boiling point of butane is approximately -0.5°C. - This means that when the outside temperature drops below 0°C, butane completely stops evaporating in a cylinder left outside. - As a result, the boiler or radiant heater goes out, even though 40–50% of the liquid gas remains in the cylinder!

Therefore, for outdoor heating purposes, it is absolutely essential to use pure technical propane, which has a boiling point as low as -42°C. Pure propane evaporates steadily and maintains operating pressure even during Poland’s bitterly cold winters.

When does a 33-kg cylinder stack outperform an above-ground tank?

Installing a residential LPG tank (e.g., 2,700 L) involves strict building code requirements (distances from property lines, manholes, overhead lines), as well as a notification procedure and inspections by the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT).

On small urban or recreational lots, a 33 kg cylinder array is an excellent solution: 1. Modular system (2x2 or 2x3 cylinders): Two groups of cylinders (working and reserve) connected by a gas ramp with an automatic switching regulator. 2. Automatic switch: When the working cylinders are empty, the valve automatically switches the gas supply to the reserve set, and the indicator turns red—without interrupting the boiler’s operation. 3. No building permits or inspection fees: The cylinder set does not require a building permit or annual UDT inspections of the tank.

Estimated consumption and costs for a set of 33-kg cylinders

For a well-insulated home with an area of approximately 100–120 m², a set of 4 x 33 kg cylinders (132 kg of propane) is sufficient during periods of moderate cold to power a condensing boiler for central heating and hot water for about 3–5 weeks.
